My grandson stayed with us this past week. He’s 12 now, and I’m noticing how much things are changing.
More Time Away
He’s spending more time with friends on the phone these days. I took him to the movies with his friends, which he went to on his own. He had school activities that ran late. The first night we didn’t pick him up until nine o’clock.
Now he’s spending almost more time outside of the house than with us.
This reminds me of how important these personal connections are. I wrote more about it in The Real Magic of Holiday Parties.
What We Did Together
Even with all that, we still got to do a bunch of different stuff. We went hiking, watched movies, played video games, built gingerbread houses, and baked cookies. He also slept over at a friend’s house for a birthday party.
The Challenges
It’s not all easy. He struggles to remember to do his homework. We tried to keep the trains running on time. I hope we did a fair job.
Conclusion
It’s one of those bittersweet things. He’s getting older and having these other activities, but at the same time, he still wants to spend time with his grandparents. That’s nice.
